World Oceans Day

June 08, 2024

Learn more about the challenges facing our oceans on #WorldOceanDay.

πŸ“… Why World Oceans Day is important

World Oceans Day was created to raise awareness of the central role the oceans play in our lives. The oceans cover more than 70% of the Earth's surface and are an important source of food, oxygen and climate regulation. Nevertheless, they are severely threatened by human activities such as pollution, overfishing and climate change.

Give the oceans more ❀️ - they give it back

Pollution, overfishing and climate change. The oceans are under threat. Yet they give us so much:

1

Habitat for animals

The oceans are home to around 230,000 known species, although the actual number is probably in the millions.

2

Carbon reservoir

Oceans absorb about 30% of the CO2 produced by humans, helping to mitigate the effects of climate change.

3

Oxygen producer

Phytoplankton in the ocean produce at least 50% of the oxygen we breathe.

4

Food source

Over three billion people rely on the oceans as their main source of protein.

5

Economic engine

Coastal and marine resources and the tourism industry provide millions of jobs worldwide.

β€œIf we want to combat ocean pollution effectively, we have to start with the rivers.”

- Karsten Hirsch, Co-Founder Plastic Fischer

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO PROTECT THE OCEANS βœ…

βœ“ Reduce plastic: Use reusable products, avoid single-use plastic and support plastic-free initiatives.

βœ“ Dispose of waste properly: Make sure that your waste is recycled properly and does not end up in nature

βœ“ Consume consciously: Choose sustainable fish and seafood products and find out about their origin.

βœ“ Get involved: Take part in local clean-up campaigns and support organizations that work to protect the oceans.

βœ“ Educate and inform: Share your knowledge about the importance of and threats to the oceans with your friends and family. Post about it on social media.

βœ“ Collect plastic with us: We collect plastic in rivers so that it doesn't end up in the oceans. See what that looks like.

Plastic Fischer - A solution at the source

This is exactly where we at Plastic Fischer come in: We stop plastic waste directly in the rivers before it reaches the oceans. Since our founding in April 2019, we have successfully collected and recycled thousands of tons of plastic waste in India and Indonesia. By using innovative technologies and working closely with local communities, we are helping to rid rivers of plastic and raise awareness in local communities.
