Ocean plastic waste is one of the biggest crises facing our planet, and it’s getting worse. If nothing changes, plastic pollution in our oceans is set to quadruple by 2050. But most of that plastic doesn’t start in the ocean. It comes from land. In Mumbai, that’s exactly what’s happening, as mismanaged waste often gets swept into storm drains and waterways, then carried straight into the sea.
That’s why, together with Planet Wild, we’re deploying our biggest TrashBoom yet in Mumbai. TrashBooms are floating barriers with net skirts that stop drifting waste, while fish and other aquatic life can pass by freely underneath. With Planet Wild’s support, we’re installing a 42-meter-long TrashBoom, organizing a massive clean-up to remove built-up waste, and upgrading our purpose-built sorting and processing facility. This will stop hundreds of tonnes of plastic before it reaches the ocean.
Planet Wild is building a global community of people who care deeply about the planet. Every month, they team up with a new partner organization around the world to bring back endangered species, support our oceans, and restore forests. Planet Wild’s work is made possible by the contributions of its community members. All projects are documented through monthly video reports to show the community how they’re protecting nature.
