Tackling plastic pollution

Our projects focus on intercepting plastic waste directly in rivers and tributaries before it reaches the ocean.

We currently operate six projects in India and one in Indonesia, working closely with local communities to ensure efficiency and long-term impact. We prioritize tributaries, where plastic is easier to collect and operations don’t interfere with boat traffic, while also tackling pollution in larger rivers, despite their challenging conditions during rainy seasons.

What we handle to create an impact

What we handle to
create an impact

Here are the 3 categories that we manage, in order to clean plastic from rivers.

In a nutshell: For every 1kg of plastic, we have to move 2 kg of water and 1kg of organic materials.
We’re finalizing our updated financial overview to give you full transparency on how every contribution is spent.
Organics

We find a lot of things in our systems that are of natural origin such as fruits, trees, dead animals (of literally all sizes). These items are released back into the river as they don’t cause any harm to the environment.

Non-Organic

Everything that is not of natural origin and harmful for the environment is collected and brought to our Sorting Facilities. These items include straws, bags, packaging material, all kinds of mixed waste, fridges, textiles and everything else you can imagine.

Moisture

As we collect the material out of the rivers, we have to let it dry for quite a while. That means that we have to move a lot of water around until we have the net weight of the plastic that we account as impact for.

River Operations & Local Teams

Most of our budget goes directly into employing people from local, underserved communities in India and Indonesia. With fair salaries, health insurance, and social security, Plastic Fischer provides dignified, stable jobs. Every day, they remove plastic from rivers, transport, and manage it responsibly — a social and environmental win: cleaner ecosystems and secure livelihoods.

Infrastructure & Technology

We invest in building and maintaining the systems that make our work possible: TrashBooms for intercepting plastic, Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) for sorting and managing waste, and machinery such as balers, shredders, dryers, rickshaws, and trucks. We also ensure regular maintenance and invest in R&D for new, more efficient, and sometimes more automated solutions. This ensures long-term waste management infrastructure in the eight cities we operate.

Recycling & Waste Processing

Recyclables enter local markets, while non-recyclables are sent to leading national co-processing plants, with our expenses covering both transport and treatment. This ensures the waste is managed in line with international standards, which is the best alternative to landfilling. We also run small recycling labs in some cities, where we upcycle river plastic into high-visibility vests for our teams, floaters for our TrashBooms, candles, pouches, and other items that are meant to serve as tangible examples for a circular economy.

Awareness, Community Engagement & Partnerships

Apart from our core operations in the rivers, we organise education and awareness campaigns, provide household waste collection services and stakeholder roundtables with Governments, NGOs and locals. We also represent Plastic Fischer internationally, share our learnings and build partnerships to scale our impact further. At the same time, we ensure global visibility for our work and brand, laying the foundation to grow and expand our operations worldwide.

FAQ.

FAQ

FAQ.

If you have any questions
feel free to contact us
What happens to the plastic after you collect it?

The plastic goes to our sorting facilities, called MRF, where we dry and segregate it into two categories:

Recyclables: PET, HDPE, aluminum, glass - reintroduced into the local supply chain. We also run our own recycling projects, producing elements for our TrashBooms, signaling vests, and pouches from collected materials.

Non-recyclables: Multilayer plastic, LDPE, styrofoam - processed through co-processing in cement kilns, which replaces coal and prevents landfilling or ocean disposal.

Unfortunately, we're not magicians who can turn linear materials into circular opportunities - but co-processing is the international best practice for non-recyclable waste, and infinitely better than the alternatives.

The recycling quota? Varies by location depending on local conditions (type of waste flowing in rivers) - typically around 5% is recyclable, but this can fluctuate significantly. TL:DR: Here’s a video

How do you verify and measure your impact claims?

Our credo is: We communicate what we can prove. What we measure: The dry weight of plastic that we prepared for processing in our Sorting Facilities - this is what the 1€ = 1kg formula represents. How we track it: All steps follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and are tracked via third-party software (Inclusiv). Third-party validation: We're soon B Corp certified (pending) and have certified multiple locations under the Ocean Bound Plastic (OBP) standard, whose requirements we exceed significantly.

Do local people benefit from your work?

Absolutely. Local people are the head and heart of our operations. Plastic Fischer only hires from the cities we operate in - no Europeans flying in to play boss. Locals manage projects, teams, secure permits, operate technology, and handle waste processing.

Beyond providing stable employment, private health insurance and income security for our teams and their families, river communities benefit from cleaner waterways in front of their homes - fewer waterborne diseases, reduced flooding, and improved quality of life.

You'll find more local stories above this FAQ section.

Is Plastic Fischer also addressing the root causes of plastic pollution?

Yes! The TrashBooms tackle the symptoms, but we address root causes too. We provide waste bins to households and organize regular collection, creating the missing waste management infrastructure. We run school campaigns and volunteer events to raise awareness about plastic pollution and prevention. We also host roundtables with stakeholders like local governments, NGOs, waste producers, and residents to identify gaps and develop systemic solutions. It's the combination of immediate river cleanup and long-term prevention that makes our approach comprehensive.

How do you ensure the social impact claims are legitimate?

Our social impact is built on direct employment and community engagement. We've created 90 full-time jobs across India and Indonesia, employing people who were previously day-laborers. Our employees receive regular working hours, timely and fair pay, and safe working environments.

We work closely with local communities, treat employees with respect, and listen to their needs. That is why Plastic Fischer is not only about the plastic - it's direct poverty alleviation through job creation.
